Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida connects older adults and adults with disabilities to resources and assistance for living safely with independence and dignity.

AAASWFL uses volunteers in two vital programs that serve older adults and adults with disabilities in Collier County: SHINE Medicare counseling and Health & Wellness programs.

SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) volunteers help older adults and adults with disabilities better understand their Medicare benefits and evaluate their Medicare plans and options. Volunteer counselors also help low-income beneficiaries find cost-saving programs. SHINE volunteers also help protect older adults from Medicare fraud and abuse. SHINE Counselors receive initial training and mentoring, and work with a team to continue their ongoing training as Medicare programs change.

Our Health & Wellness volunteers are trained to lead one or more workshops for older adults. These workshops include falls prevention classes, arthritis-friendly exercise programs, caregiver support workshops and chronic disease self-management classes.

AAASWFL volunteers are reimbursed for volunteer-related mileage. Training is free for all AAASWFL volunteers with a volunteer commitment. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply.
